Dr. Yan’s practice at St. Joseph’s Health Centre covers the full scope of urologic surgery, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques and urologic oncology. Below is an overview of the main areas of practice. Referrals are accepted from family physicians via fax or email.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
GreenLEP — GreenLight Laser Enucleation of the Prostate
For men with enlarged prostates causing urinary obstruction, Dr. Yan performs GreenLEP — a minimally invasive laser enucleation technique that works at any prostate size, including very large glands. Most patients go home the same day or the following morning.

Dr. Yan performs the full range of kidney surgery for both cancerous and complex benign conditions:
Partial Nephrectomy
Removal of the tumour while preserving the rest of the kidney. Performed laparoscopically or open, depending on the complexity and location of the mass.
Radical Nephrectomy
Complete removal of the kidney, typically for larger or more advanced renal tumours. Laparoscopic or open approach based on the clinical situation.
Complex Renal Mass Surgery
For anatomically challenging tumours — large size, central location, proximity to the hilum or collecting system — where surgical planning and technique require particular care.
Prostate Cancer
Dr. Yan performs radical prostatectomy for men with prostate cancer who are candidates for surgical treatment. The consultation includes a thorough review of the diagnosis, staging, and a discussion of all treatment options — including active surveillance, radiation, and surgery — so that the decision is informed and shared.
Bladder Tumours & Hematuria
For patients presenting with blood in the urine (hematuria) or known bladder tumours, Dr. Yan performs cystoscopy, transurethral resection of bladder tumours (TURBT), and ongoing surveillance. Timely assessment is important — visible blood in the urine should always be investigated.
